Many people feel uncomfortable with the “unknown”. Many people struggle with change and uncertainty. There is comfort in routine and structure. Knowing what to expect can put us at ease. The fear of the unknown can be a real thing. However, there is often a deeper rooted thought in there. I often hear “what if I fail?”, “what if it does not work out?”, “what if people judge me?”, or “what if I regret or dislike it?”, plus much more.
Sometimes we can doubt our own ability (self-efficacy) to accomplish something, and sometimes we can just feel overwhelmed and not know where to start. Maybe you are just complacent where you are. Maybe you do not care to change and you are happy. That is okay too. Other times we may not have people who support or encourage us, and this can be quite discouraging. There will be times in life where we have to be our own cheerleader.
We have to talk ourselves up and encourage ourselves at times. How do we become comfortable in our decision to make change? We can try to be informed as possible about the details, such as an old school pros and cons list. We can create a back up plan. This can be helpful if you have tend to immediately go to the worse case scenario. Can you equip yourself with a plan to address that, should it happen? What about a time in your past where you have been successful in similar changes or experiences? How did you handle that? Let us look at the evidence…what proves that you can adapt and change and work through new experiences? What were some of the challenges and how did you work through them?
Yes, change is scary…and ironically change is the only constant thing we can expect in life. Change can cause anxiety. Change can also be embraced. Not everything is permanent in life. Remember, making one change does not mean you cannot make another. Change can be the first step towards a momentum of change. There is another constant though, you will still be you after the change. You will have more experiences under your belt maybe, more skills, and new qualities to add to your repertoire. Try not to let the fear of change stop you. Be kind to yourself. Try and restructure how you view change and jump in.
